Aboriginal art is significant to everyday Aboriginal life. The creation stories, traditional laws and customs have been passed down through paintings and inscriptions for tens of thousands of years. Aboriginal people use 'songlines' to pass down creation stories, laws and trading routes through generations. The distinct art styles of each region reflect the traditional life, creation stories and surrounding environments.

In the heart of Central Australia, between the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, sits Australia's most famous outback town. Alice owes its existence to a cross-section of plucky pioneers and today, travellers can ponder various historic milestones at a number of key heritage sites in and around the town. Just 150 years ago, explorer John McDouall Stuart forged a path through the heart of the continent and the Overland Telegraph Line followed a few years later, connecting Australia to the outside world and putting Alice Springs on the map. The Alice Springs Telegraph Station was the original site of the town and some of its old buildings have been restored and are open for exploration today.

The East and West MacDonnell Ranges stretch out for hundreds of kilometres on both sides of Alice Springs. The traditional owners of the Alice Springs area, the Arrernte people, believe giant caterpillars called the Yeperenye became the Ranges - they entered this world through one of the dramatic gaps in the escarpments of the area. Adventure experiences abound in Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Take a wildlife cruise past prehistoric crocodiles and glide alongside massive canyon walls that were thousands of years in the making. You can also view Kakadu’s magnificent escarpment, rainforest and roaring waterfalls from the air on a scenic flight, then swim in one of the Park’s many natural rock pools.

Uluru, 440 kilometres south west of Alice Springs, fascinates and inspires people from around the world with its glowing presence at sunrise and sunset. The Anangu people prefer visitors don't climb Uluru because it's a sacred site, so nowadays many visitors choose to do the Uluru base walk instead. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is connected to Alice by networks of sealed roads and has its own airport. Archaeological work suggests that Aboriginal people have lived in the area for at least 22,000 years.

The Katherine area hosts a variety of events every year. The Katherine region has many festivals throughout the year that showcase the culture and characters of the area. There are annual art and craft festivals lasting the whole weekend and outback events such as camp drafts and rodeos.

One of the best ways to enjoy the natural highs World-Heritage listed Kakadu National Park has to offer is by bush walking through its diverse and beautiful landscapes. Established trails throughout the Park take in some of its most impressive scenery including vistas, waterfalls, plunge pools, Aboriginal art sites, wetlands and other environments. Walking also puts you up close to the Park's plethora of wildlife.

Nine Aboriginal groups call the area home, including the Warumungu, Walpiri, Kaiditch and Alyawarr people, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about aboriginal life, history and land in the Tennant Creek region. According to Warumungu legend, the town of Tennant Creek grew up around the home of a spiky tailed goanna called Nyinkka - a powerful ancestral being. The Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre showcases this Warumungu culture.

For the more serious birdwatcher, Kakadu is home to the endangered gouldian finch and red goshawk as well as several other species endemic to only this region. Literally millions of magpie geese inhabit the wetlands of the north and to witness them going about their business en masse is truly a spectacle.
