Almost all of Canada's 26 million egg-laying (battery) hens are kept in the most appalling conditions imaginable. They are crammed so tightly into small wire cages that their feathers chafe off. We were the first gringos to show up at a cockfight in this isolated town in the mountains of Dominican Republic. We were looking for some real local flavor, and we definitely got it. Cockfighting is still 100% legal in a handful of countries around the world, and advocates of this blood sport would think we were crazy for raising an eyebrow about this worldwide obsession. It is valuable insight into a culture, but definitely a little disturbing.
