In this episode, Scott introduces the show from Chief Shakes Island in Wrangell. After a brief history lesson about Shakes Island and Wrangell, Scott meets up with Jim Leslie (owner of Alaska Waters) to kick off the Stikine River day tour. After a tour of the river, the jet boat makes its way up toward Chief Shakes Glacier. Even though the boat wasn’t able to get all the way up to the face of the glacier, Scott and the other guests were able to get a hands on experience with the icebergs! We always have a wonderful time in Wrangell and the folks at the Stikine Inn are doing a wonderful job of restoring their hotel. Stop in and get a first class massage or visit their new bar/lounge and look out over the bay!

"The Last Great Race on Earth" has a starting line, but that line seemed a long way from where I was standing; surrounded by a howling pack of grungy mutts in a warm and muddy mountain valley. The scene was yelping chaos as Matt Hayashida's favorite collection of dogs were harnessed and attached to a metal-go-cart contraption. Eight people piled onto the buggy. I couldn't imagine the train of canines moving this unwieldy apparatus with any sort of energy, but Matt recommended I hold on tight. "Once they start it's hard to wind 'em down," Matt had mentioned earlier. And when the shouting of "Git it! Git It! Git it!" sent the dogs flying forward, imagining the Iditarod starting line in Anchorage suddenly became a whole lot easier!
