I have been to the Finca and have come to know this family over the last 20 years. I can assure you this is no trap. These are honest, hard working people who regularly put others before themselves. Their talents are beyond number and include but certainly are not limited to building, business, compassion, and love of family and community. What you see on the video is just the tip of their work in this country, and, rest assured, if you have a true interest in this area and this gift, don't hesitate to investigate this further!

I can see from the video that the Thompsons put a lot of love & effort into cleaning up the land they purchased and turning it into a piece of paradise while employing local folks. My suggestion to the reader concerned this finca is located "on top of a dump" with a "likely rat trap of a house"...? Read Al Thompson's book, "Detours" in which he tells about himself & his wife, his 40-year career as a teacher & professor and how he and Carolyn came to Guatemala...in great detail. US builders regularly build on land once used as dump sites...the problem is, they don't necessarily clean the land up as the Thompsons have done. Bravo to them for their courage and ingenuity!

When buying something someone else built, building codes and inspections are your friend. For a person who thinks mistakes are a positive and who built this likely rat trap of a house on top of a dump by himself with no oversight or input from professional architects and contractors sounds like far too risky of a proposition for me.

How much are you asking for your bit of paradise?
