Thanks for the comments! All good observations regarding bear safety, the fact is that Anan is a very unique situation where the bears have become somewhat habituated to people coming and going. While they are wild in one sense, these bears are not going to react as a lone bear in the woods might. The relative density and proximity of bears create a very unusual dynamic where just about anything *could* happen. Obviously, the gun is the LAST option. Thanks for watching and your feedback. --

I get your concern and generally you're right. Speaking as a life long Alaskan with a lot of backcountry experience, I've been bluff charged a lot. However, wait until you've had that one time encounter, where behavior is less than predictable to standard body language with a 20 minute face to face - then you'll consider what you bring with you. I suggest before you fire off assumptions about the guide, you do your homework by calling them or read their website www.alaskawaters.com - My assumption is you're the owner of the said website above.

I wish the guide would follow the protocol used for viewing bears on the Katmai Coast in Alaska. All guides there carry marine flares, instead of a gun, to deal with the small possibility of bear aggression. You don't need a gun to be safe in the Alaskan wilderness - marine flares will make any bear run for their lives. Learn more about the truth about grizzly bears at my website, www.grizzlybay.org
