I stayed at a homestay in Leh about 2 years ago, it was extremely basic but the family was simply so warm, there's no way I'd trade it for a posh hotel. I remember spending a couple of sunny mornings by the window upstairs, watching the family go about their household chores right from the vegetable garden (yes that's where our dinner came from every evening :) to the buttery tea the lady of the house prepared every morning. She didn't mind me hanging around the kitchen at all! It was truly a memorable experience. I just wish finding them were easier! A network of such stays is much needed in India.

I know Arasinamakki is about 30 KM from Mangalore. Mangalore by road from Bangalore is about the same as Ooty, about 8 hours or so. Maybe lesser.
