About Me

kiaorana
Kia Orana - that's the usual greeting in the Cook Islands and it means "may you live long". I'm John Roberts and my home is actually more than 12,000 miles away from the South Pacific paradise I've fallen in love with. I live in Cheshire in the UK. I am also the sole author of the only independent, non-commercial guide on the internet to all of the Cook Islands. It's very much a labour of love, and it's also my way of giving something back to the people of the Islands by telling the wider world about a unique and beautiful paradise. And the site has allowed me to indulge my love of writing and the written word - I worked for many years as a journalist and broadcaster with BBC television and radio. And once a journalist always a journalist - my site also includes a weekly update of news from and about the Islands. I hope through the videos I'm going to post on here, you'll explore some of the highlights of a place I call paradise, and maybe I can persuade you to pay a visit yourself. Meitaki (thank you)

I am not disputing for one moment that Mangaia is an island of great beauty, and certainly agee that all of the Cook Islands have their own beauty. The point I was making was that it's not everyone's idea of a tropical island. And it 's not just me saynig that...several islanders went out of their way to make that point to me. I loved it, and I would urge people to pay it a visit. You are right to be proud of your home, and I hope others will find out why by going there.

Mangaia is not a beautiful island in the usual sense, but it is an island of great beauty. The landscape is incredibly rugged, many roads are rough and rubble-strewn, but everywhere there's greenery and life. And what makes it most special are the people. Mangaians have a fierce sense of independence, great pride in their island and show incredible warmth to visitors. The island is less than an hour's flying time from the Cook Islands' capital, Rarotonga This is the third in a series of short films about the Cook Islands.
