Vieques is a small island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. At a first glance it is hard to imagine Vieques in any other way than a serene tropical paradise. But as you look deeper, you begin to see a much more complicated picture. In exploring the gorgeous coastline and dense jungles, it feels as if you are stumbling into a crime scene that is still under investigation. The more you talk to the locals, the more you realize how much of an impact the former military presence has had on the people living on the island.

Twenty years after the nuclear reactor explosion in Chernobyl, we journeyed there to see the state of things in a town that now has a higher population of mutated wolves and bears than it does people. We visited the site itself and watched our Geiger counter’s readings go through the roof. Nuclear energy is clearly not the future, as the abandoned schools and empty homes of Chernobyl attest.
