San Antonio: Missed Connections in San Antonio: Final Four Edition
Posted on Mar 21, 2008 11:01 PM

Yeah, we'd love to set you up this week, but our eyes are glued to our brackets as March Madness begins. What's spring break when we can spend the next two weeks in sticky bars yelling at the TV?

Luckily Craigslist can help you find the cilantro in your guacamole, the buffalo on your wings:

Pegasus :: This laid-back gay bar features karaoke on weekend nights and nice... nice bodies all week long. 1402 N. Main Ave.

Limelight :: This college-vibe bar hosts live music and art shows simultaneously--as well as opportunities to offend women you want to make out with. 2718 N. Saint Marys St.

Elizabeth's Mexican Restaurant :: This hidden gem in the city's northwestern quadrant serves up delicious tamales and eye contact with cute girls. 5251 Timberhill Dr.

San Antonio: Tony and Eva: Grounded by Gossip in San Antonio
Posted on Dec 18, 2007 04:01 PM

Newlyweds Eva Longoria and Tony Parker may be battling rumors that he had an affair with French model Alexandra Parassant (the catwalker claims she hooked up with the NBA star just after the wedding), but the couple was all cuddles and interlaced fingers as they disembarked from their late night flight into Terminal 1 at San Antonio International Airport.

Now we're not saying that the Spurs baller and the Desperate Housewife were putting on an act for the cameras, but when was the last time you felt like getting frisky with your boo as you waited for your luggage to drop in baggage claim? More likely, the pair is maintaining their so-called united front, with Longoria standing by her man as he gets slung through the mud. Maybe not the best time to wear white.

San Antonio: ¿Qué Pasa Con El Museo Alameda?
Posted on Oct 22, 2007 06:01 PM

It's been a tough six months for the Museo Alameda, which opened in San Antonio this spring. After a weak opening exhibition featuring items culled from other Smithsonian Institution museums, the Alameda has had trouble drawing visitors. Fewer than 100,000 people have stopped in though museum officials predicted 400,000 within the first year.

High ticket prices are to blame, say administrators. But the museum just got some controversial funding from the San Antonio City Council to reduce admission to $4 for adults. If a capital campaign is successful, the Alameda could go free--which would put it in line with the Smithsonian facilities in Washington, DC.

So what else is there to see at the Alameda besides of all this drama? A video and photography exhibition chronicles the achievements of Cuban-American salsa goddess Celia Cruz until April 2008. In the upstairs galleries, a collection of Guatemalan textiles--called huipiles--will be on view until January. And the amazing botanica/gift shop (above) is still the place for South Texas tchotchkes.

San Antonio: Flying Chihuahua Redux and Beyond: Strange In San Antonio
Posted on May 04, 2007 08:01 PM

Austin is "weird," but San Antonio is "strange." Big difference there, so you better get it right. After yesterday's life-altering picture of a flying Chihuahua, we stumbled upon Strange In San Antonio, a blog dedicated to documenting all the "odd things that happen in the Alamo City." As you might expect, the Chihuahua is hot news right now.

Additional non-Chihuahua coverage includes news of Santeria pigeon sacrifices, weird weather, and attractions such as the Toilet Seat Museum (pictured above). Quite a bit of the news comes from one local paper, but it seems enough strange stuff happens in San Antonio to keep it interesting.

San Antonio: San Antonio: You Will Believe A Chihuahua Can Fly

Caution! Airborne canine! A couple of enterprising parade-goers at this year's Fiesta San Antonio Pooch Parade decided to make their own float... with several balloons and tiny harnesses. It's safe to say, of the approximately 750 dogs who marched in the parade, these probably had the best view.

Sure, that dog doesn't look like it's having a good time at the city's annual celebration of the Battle of San Jacinto and the torching of the Alamo, but maybe that's because it hasn't had the chance to kick back on the Riverwalk and drink a margarita yet.

San Antonio: Hotel Indigo Plans San Antonio Expansion
Posted on Apr 24, 2007 04:01 PM

Looks like Yotel isn't the only "modern" brand that can go on an expansion binge. InterContinental has announced plans to open its third Texan Hotel Indigo in San Antonio. The new property has an ambitious opening date of "early 2008."

The Hotel Indigo at the Alamo will take up residence in the Gibbs Building downtown, but it won't be the first hotel to repurpose a downtown building. The Drury Plaza Hotel San Antonio River Walk opened in a renovated Art Deco bank this past February. If the PR spin is to be believed, though, the Indigo might be a touch more classy:

Hotel Indigo at the Alamo will feature renewable elements such as vivid murals,

San Antonio: San Antonio Says Hola To Latino Museum
Posted on Apr 16, 2007 07:01 PM

This Smithsonian project is off the Mall -- way off. When it opened on Friday with fireworks and a Linda Rondstadt concert (she's part Mexican!), San Antonio's Museo Alameda automatically became the country's biggest museum of Latino culture. Topped off with exhibits about Panamanian nail salons and jewelry from a Hapsburg emperor of Mexico, the $15 million museum even has a Spanish nickname -- MAS, for Museo Alameda Smithsonian. ("Mas" means "more" in Spanish, gringo.)

The museum will eventually also have a live entertainment venue in the renovated and reborn Teatro Alameda, according to the L.A. Times.

San Antonio: A Doggie Concierge Hard At Work
Posted on Dec 26, 2006 07:01 PM

It's been a while since we checked in on the Hotel Pets craze but we are happy to report that today this trend of having dogs or cats on staff is still alive.

And again, it seems like doggie concierges are leading the pack here. At the San Antonio Fairmount, Luke Tips, the Labrador with a hotel appropriate last name, is on staff as "Director of Pet Relations" and has his own business cards, complete with e-mail address, and fax, phone and toll-free numbers.

"People who've stayed at the Fairmount often call to see how Luke's doing," says front desk manager Lani Fulgencio, giving the Labrador an affectionate pat. "He's definitely in charge around here and helps

San Antonio: Lara Flynn Boyle Ties the Knot in San Antonio
Posted on Dec 21, 2006 03:01 PM
Hollywood skeletal queen and former Jack Nicholson muse, Lara Flynn Boyle, apparently hopped on a flight to San Antonio last weekend and got married to businessman Donald Ray Thomas (we know, who?!?).

The pair didn't bother with the Italian villa or the celeb-laden post-parties, and opted instead for a $36 marriage license and small ceremony (sans rings - gasp!) in Thomas' local backyard.

Jeez. How unexciting. They could have at least headed to the nearby Hyatt Hill Country Resort and done it up Texas-style. A romantic gondola ride along San Antonio's famous Riverwalk would have been nice, too.
