Romania

I spent a day in Bucharest, and couldn’t wait to get out of there. I went to the Black Sea, a place I’d always wanted to go. I had a Eurail pass for the Balkan Peninsula, so I figured it would be easy to get around. Wrong. All Romanian trains are on indefinite strike. I had to get around by convincing people to give me rides and paying plenty because gas is so expensive.

The coast has small Soviet-style resort towns for Romanian families to go on vacation. No one speaks a word of English. It’s actually a pretty cool place to visit if you’re a 10-year-old Romanian kid.

Romanian restaurants pride themselves on having page after page of animal products. They honestly have pages of pork products, pages of beef products (every part of the animal is listed with some sort of sauce or side dish) pages of various grilled meats (I saw “bear” on the menu at one restaurant). For me, the vegetarian, there was always pizza with peppers and ketchup. And that’s what I ate.

I’m sure there are a lot of nice people in Romania. I’m sure they are warm, welcoming, and honest. But Romania is in serious trouble. The government is so corrupt that people have no hope of a future. They make about $5 per day. Their expenses are higher than that. I spoke with people who said most Romanians wish for the communists to come back, because at least under Ceausescu they had some meat, eggs, milk, and sugar. Now they say they are starving. They have a huge amount of farmable land, and most of it is being done with horses and donkeys. There are gypsies on the roads everywhere.

The communist days weren’t so easy either.

My big problem with Romanians is that many of them are serious liars. I had a date with a Romanian girl in New York last year; she lied about everything and enjoyed it. While I was traveling, I was also trying to sell a camera on Craigslist back in New York, so whenever I checked my email I would also repost my ad. But not from Romania.

Romania has so many scammers trying to talk people into sending them money that Craigslist blocks out the entire country. You can’t get to Craigslist from a computer in Romania. That is a very very bad sign. I was able to get to Craigslist from Albania, but not Romania. I wouldn’t be buying any Romanian stocks in the coming years if I were you.

Then there’s the Danube Delta, one of the breadbaskets of Europe. But the government has made a mess of everything, and now it’s just a country of peasants trying to get by. They live in their 1970s Ceaucescu concrete apartment blocks and do whatever they can.

If I went back to Romania, I’d go straight to Transylvania and enjoy looking at castles. Forget about Bucharest and parts East. But I don’t think I’ll ever go back. There are too many other places in the world to see.

I just want to express my sorrow that you had only the worst of experiences and stories about Romania. Sorry you couldn't enjoy the beautiful part of Romania. And sorry also that you spoke to the wrong kind of people (that girl must have really disliked you if she lied about everything - in fact, was she really from Romania?) and got only the negative piece of information about Romania.
Trains are NOT on indefinite strike. They were for a couple of weeks at most. In fact, the expensive gasoline that you paid can easily be compensated by the cheap rail tickets. Try to find a rail ticket at 30 Euros that would travel from Vienna to Paris - that's how much the rail ticket costs across Romania - about the same distance between Vienna and Paris.
And the 5$ per day is the MINIMUM salary in this country. Sorry you couldn't meet the 30% of the population that are actually part of a blooming middle class and whose life style is pretty much resembling to any Central European.

Definately that's not what i have experienced in Romania..I'm sorry that you've had that bad experience but I would describe that only as a bad luck..!
I had great fun there and I'll always go back..Their mountain trails are so cool, skiing is cheap..by the Black sea you should have tried Vama veche..I love that place! Try to visit some monasteries too..You cannot regret that. One more advise: try to have a romanian (English speaker) with you in order to avoid some of the language problems.

I visited Romania nad my kids, american citizens, were surpriszed to see how many locals spoke english. You have to go with an open mind to such a beautiful small country, not with stories of people that see only the negative in things!

Hi, before criticizing a country whose history or culture you don't understand - because you don't mention it at all in your recount - maybe you should try some moderation and perspective.
You just look like the stereotypical 'dumb American' who just shows up somewhere where he doesn't know anybody or anything about, and expects people to roll out red carpets and kiss his ass, being honored he simply...showed up. I've been touring Romania with foreigners for the last 5 years and I have not received complaints. Yes, life for a vegetarian is not easy in Romania, but not impossible either. You're exaggerating and showing ignorance. Romania is a EU member since Jan 1, 2007, and although lagging behind the other members, after 40 years of communism, it's moving forward. You should show more diligence in expressing opinions about contexts you don't relate to or understand.

Maybe if you stayed at Marriott or Hilton in Bucharest, rented a BMW from Sixt or Bavaria and drove it to Mamaia and stayed in any of the 4 or 5 star hotels there, your experience would have been... different. I guarantee it! I'm sorry you are not pleased with your experience. Next time you go I recommend Cluj Napoca, stay in any 4 or 5 star hotels close to the center... and have some fun in Obsession... If that won't change your mind... then there's something wrong with you.

Hi there Siegel,

This is definitely the most biased and unfair posting I have recently read. You fail to mention in Bucharest the traffic is so heavy because of the fact there are over 1.2 million cars at a city population of roughly 2 million. You fail to mention Romania is not a poor country but had one of the highest in the world economical rates of growth in the past two years, way over the average of the area and even higher in compariosn to Western Europe.

I am wondering what sick people you et that told you if was better with Ceasuescu when things are getting better and there is such a large percentage of young people? They could care a less about 20 years ago. But YOU, you seem to care: what is you point?

Conclusion: this is obviously a biased and PURPOSEDLY NEGATIVE COMMENTS AND SHOULD BE DISMISSED AS A FAKE.

I personally love Romania and I am moving there this fall. I will be living in the wonderful city of Brasov. I think Romania is so beautiful and the people are very nice and friendly. The Romanian school system beats the hell out of the US school system. Sorry folks, it is the truth. The average HS graduate is way smarter that the average American grad. Truth be told about 60% of anyone under 30 speaks English and many other languages.

The only thing that I do not like about Romania is that when Americans like you travel there, you leave a lasting bad impression that I have to live with. This is a hard stereo type that I work hard to change.

Anyone seeking information about Brasov please feel free to contact me at shirokuma9@aol.com. If I do not know that answer my Romanian wife will. For those that are thinking that she married me for the visa, think again. I can’t get her to move to the US. So to be with the woman I love I am giving up a very high paying stressful job to live a simpler but much happier life in Brasov. Happy travels.

Great read, it seems I have to agree with 99% of the other people who responded. I went to visit Romania last summer and my experience was simply marvelous. Bucharest was very hectic but my final destination was the beautiful college town of Iasi. Everyone seemed to help one another and gave off such a strong sense of pride in their city and themselves it just made me feel peaceful. Sorry about you not finding a nice girl, it takes some level of manliness to get hot girls *vegetarian wimps like you might find it pretty hard to get a girl especially when the women have a strong sense of self pride like all of the Romanian girls I met had. Well cheers to Romania for showing a geek like me a great time, a shame other geeks got screwed but hope everyone leaves that nice country alone so when I move there I don't run into too may people I don't like.

Hi,
That’s not true; I am an Indian who married a Romanian girl in New Delhi at Romanian Embassy. I came to Romania at May/2008. I don't speak Romanian or other European languages but I found a job in Craiova. In my office everybody speak English so language problem is a big lie. Yes old citizens don’t speak English but less than 30 years old people speak good English. Just one month before my son born in Craiova city. I am very happy with my wife in Romania. So what ever you said it’s not true it’s a big F**kin lie. Romania is a beautiful country and people are very nice.

Dude I went there and I met very nice women who did not scam me or want anything from me. I was taken in by a gypsy family who protected me and fed me and we laughed and joked and cried they are still my friends today they write me once a year or so. I guess your intentions may have been different when you went there then mine. I did learn alot from being there and what I learned is yes many are corrupt but the people hate the coruption. i also learned that you can not buy there respect and i came away missing the people and the countryside. There is good and bad where ever you go my friend and you sometimes reap what you sew.I can also tell you the family never asked for money or anything they were just proud that I chose them as my friends. I almost can say I had a religious experience there that will stay with me forever.

There is a bit of truth to all the postings here. I did visit Romania last year, and it is rather pretty in many places. Bucharesti is a large city, and much wealthier than most of the surrounding countryside and other towns. I did not spend time there, but I did stay for a night in Brasov. Romania did look more modern and clean than Bulgaria where I had just came from.

But, it can not be denied that there is a certain element of Romanian society that does engage in scamming. There is a village, that its entire existence is just around internet scamming.

You have to be careful on some of the trains too, there are numerous reports of Romanian youth getting on there and trying to intimidate people to hand over money. I saw some that got on the train and were walking past each cabin, using camera phones to take photos of women.

I think Romania is culturally distinct from its neighbors, in good and bad ways.

I have read lots of blogs and comments from Romanians and Non Romanians and yes some people have had bad experiences as well as good ones, what I notice about quite a few Romanian people is that when someone has had a bad experience then the Romanian people seem to think the right you call other countries anything they want, they seem to enjoy insulting the entire population of a country and I think what I have read alot of Romanian people are arrogant and believe they are a better country and race of people than anyone else and become dare I say abusive when they get confronted. I my self have have known a few nice Romanian people but also met some really viscious , ignorant and smug Romanians who think they are God's gift to mankind.

It really PO's me when Americans talk trash about Romania. "I was jogging down the street in my bright pink lycra hotpants and someone shouted "Fag!"" or "I was trying to pick up a 16 year old in a bar and she stole my wallet!" Get real, just because a country is poor and seemingly "backwards" doesn't mean they don't know a "rube" when they see one. Behave yourself as you would in NYC or LA. If you get scammed then, I'm sorry, but it would happen to you in DC as well.

As far as gypsies intimidating you to hand over your money? Cum se spune "Wuss" pe romaneste? Losers.

To Visitor 133744: Your reaction that "it really PO's you when Americans talk trash about Romania" is exactly the point that Romanians become abusive or aggressive when confronted. We are not trying to insult or hurt Romanians, we are just making observations about them. For whatever it is worth I will add my observations of Romanians too.

I am continuing.I have often heard Romanians talk trash about other ethic groups, "black people smell", "gypsies are thieves", they often realize that a westerner considers this racism and they will say "excuse me I am racist". They get defensive about their country very quick even before it is attacked. When you work with them it is very hard to tell them that they made a mistake, because again they become very defensive and also they paralyze and their brain does not work at all. If at any moment in an interaction they get bored or negative, you are doomed to get nowhere with them, even if you are making a business proposal that is beneficial to them as well.

Final part and I am done. They will become stubborn and will start creating all kinds of obstacles of why what you want to do cannot be done. As a matter of fact when someone says that Romanians are bureaucrats and not creative, I always think that if they dont want something to get done they are incredibly creative at finding reasons why it cannot be done.

1. we , in this country DO love meat. It's a fact. Healthy people in Roomania DO eat meat. Less than 3 % of the population is vegetarian and very few foreigners spend money in Romanian restaurants to be worthy giving them special treatment. So, when u go to Romania, you eat what Romanian people eat. if you dont like it, dont come here next year, stay home and eat you veggies( com'on man, u r a real man, right, u should eat meat, not only veggies, like a top model.... )
2.yes, the rails are sometimes on strike. This is EUROPE,Hello ??? Not US, not UK ! It is Europe, and just like in Italy or France, we do strike, whenever we want. It's part of the fun of coming here. Don't like it ? Stay home next time, there, in your country where u can eat your healthy vegetables and where the rail is never on strike.

Now, if I think a bit, if your country is THAT great, why bother to travel anymore ?? Just stay there and enjoy it.

unfair review; and coming from an american makes it even worst. There is no greater communism anywhere than it is here (yes i do live in the US now). You don`t call it communism, you don`t organize festivities just to show your support to a dictator and the doctrine, but you live it everyday. And I`m telling you this after living in Romania for a while during the communist regime. Actually, i don`t think anywhere in the civilized world the people are still as tied up to the state and system as they are here. Romania?sure, min and average income are rather low; people complain about it and strike, some chose to make "easy money" by scams ...now tell me, why did i receive a few days ago a message on my cell phone asking me to contact "the bank with my account details" and when i call the number they ask me for my CC and PIN number? take advantage of a weak or flawed laws system doesn`t make romania or romanians ino thieves or scammers- may i remind you, mr nobody, that Romania has been pushed one way and the other and influenced in the way it handled everything after the revolution (1989) by the western governments, including the US? (or perhaps, mostly by the US) ...or can you explain me, in a country where "nobody speaks english", how come craigslist had to deny access ?if people don`t speak english, how can they become internet scammers? A contradiction which, by itself, discredits your revire Mr. Nobody.

As for the romanian cuisine, for you and others who don`t know, is a blend of traditional foods and influences from turkey, greece and the balkans as a whole, austria, hungary, ukraine and russia,...lot more choices than i had yesterday on the menu of the restaurant i visited here. the "chefs" are either teenage americans trying to make an extra-buck or illegal immigrants trying to make some fast money, both categories having nothing in common with cooking. Whenever you have a complain about romanian restaurants, at least in a big city there like the one i`m living here in is, please do edit your "review" with details.

And my opinion about you: just another globe trotter that made cash either by inheritance or by winning the lottery (because yes, i know how much american companies pay for someone who wants enough free time to travel around the globe and write reviews) who expects the world to bow before his american passport, and is shocked about the real world. DUDE! Romanians are trying to scam you because so many others before you with an american passport went there and proved how stupid you are, in an overwhelming majority!!! It`s not their fault for trying, it`s your fault if you bite it.

What is the leading cause of death in the U.S and in most western countries? chronic disease. From what? Low education, bad eating habits, poverty, fast food, ignorance, consumerism, sedentary lifestyle, and stress. Romanian cuisine goes back waaaay before the english came to north america and slaughtered the poor natives. And chronic disease was never the #1 killer in romania. What does that tell you about romanian food? That it worked for us for about 2000 years. But an ignorant twat such as yourself would not know that. So if you don't like romania, well, you weren't invited there so fuck off! Go eat your deep fried garbage. Go, go to the oh so civilized McDonalds and get a salad(with extra dressing of course!) You should have stayed in florida if your such a dim wit. What were you thinking, that you would go to east europe and find the same shit as home? Now you know, stay away from ROMANIANS!!! oooo scary romanians. I think that you Mr. Siegal, are prejudiced. You are prejudiced against romanians and you prove it by overtly expressing your contempt towards them. Of course you would never admit to that, you give reasons such as "their crooks/gypsies". But that's ok, many people don't like you either. Why don't you try going to Iraq, Iran, or Afghanistan with a US passport and with that name? Why don't you go there and give us your account once you come back. Or just go to cuba and stay at an all inclusive resort, perhaps then you would not complain as much.

Many countries are not using craigslist. Why is that? Well, in Siegal's opinion it is because the people in those countries are thieves. And why does Siegal go on craigslist while traveling? Had he not spent time in a net cafe, maybe he would have actually learned a thing or two about the country he was in. But wait, craigslist can be accessed from Romania, therefore his article is a load of B.S - he just invented a reason to bash Romanians. Siegal, have you even been to Romania? And no, you're wrong, I believe it's U.S.A that has no future, Romania is moving forward and people are quite well off. You should be worrying about the problems you have at home. Worry about those who were scammed by visa and banks (irresponsible loaning) whose entire existence is devoted to paying off interest (sounds like slavery to me). Worry about Blacks who still live in ghettos and cant afford schooling. Siegal why are you acting out the ignorant idiot american role? Why? You're so unworldly-open up!

continued from b4.3Romanian food is scrumptious! So many people complimented Romanian food (I mean non-Romanians of course). And I don't know about "America" (they're known to be a bit rigid and closed-minded south of the boarder), but up here in Toronto Canada, we have many European deli stores where you can find a wide variety of Romanian products, and yes meatless products too. Siegal, why the hatred? You must suffer from some sort of inferiority complex. Judging by the way you look, you most certainly do. Either way who cares? Your opinion is shared by a small minority of people, and it denotes a troubling lack of knowledge about the world, and a lack of refinement on the way you approach what you don't understand. Indeed it must be hard to understand certain phenomena when you socialize only within a closed "elite" circle and attend "sophisticated" parties in manhattan new york. The ease with which you pass judgment shows you are infantile and immature-even though you are greying.

I am born in Australia, by two Romanian parents who ran away from the country during the communist times because it was so horrible. Upon turning 18yrs old, I applied for my Ro citizenship, with the hope and thought that one day I will live and travel more through Europe (as it is now in the EU). Last year I took an Australian university friend to Ro, and she was shocked at the poverty that can exist in some parts (mostly due to the notorious alcoholics and criminals in Braila, when my family is from). However, she was amazed at the beauty of the snow hills, accomodation, English-speakers and general Westernisation of Sinaia and other such tourist areas. Obviously- this is what you were craving for, the Western-havens, and I'm sorry you chose the capital Bucharest instead!
To this day, my uni friend still bugs me with questions of travel plans to go back to Ro as she loved my relatives and the people's hospitality- you should try it again, but with a Romanian friend next time! Julia

I guess this shows you are prejudiced and somehow racist... sorry for saying that! i guess you have decided to take the negative aspect of your journey ... Maybe you should've read more and planned your trip more carefully!
yes, Romanians might try and scam you or rip you off, but once again you shoudl've been aware of that. I am Romanian, i travelled to many European countries, i live in the Middle East now, and i have seen worse places than Romania has! You should travel to a place like Egypt where you will get ripped off much more than in Romania .... then you will get to appreciate the beauty and the culture of this country.
I dont know which were your expectations from Romania - it is not the US and it will never be (thank God!). It is an ex-comunist country ... it's been only 20 yrs since the comunism fell ... but what do you know about that?
