New Passport Day Is Here

As of today, US citizens arriving by air from outside the 50 States, no matter what their point of origin, must have a passport to re-enter the country. (Unless you’re coming from Puerto Rico or the USVI, that is. Loophole!)

Erik Olsen over at Gadling posted about our travel news show The Map today, saying it’s “like you’re getting the real scuttlebutt, as opposed to a more stale corporate feel.”

Weekend Travel Section Roundup

There seems to have been a choice of two topics in the travel stories published this weekend: creepy, Halloween-themed tales, or serious newspapers (the WaPo, the NYT) trying a fresh take on the been-there, done-that subject of the Caribbean.

Weekend Travel Section Roundup

There was a bumper crop of worthwhile features this weekend – including a special on Africa from the LA Times, and coverage of who’d-a-thunk-it destinations like Johannesburg and LA’s Valley – so I’ll cut the preamble and get down to business.

Very-Long-Weekend Travel Section Roundup

Last weekend’s travel stories were slim pickings, no doubt due to writers and editors phoning it in before skipping out of town, but apparently on 4th of July weekend, we the people feel very, er, nautical.

9&10, Limon, Caribbean, Costa Rica
Watch
Drove to Limon. Stopped off at a Tilapia Farm restaurant on the way and caught some fish. Limon is a nice looking town but have a bad reputation for crime and drugs. We didn't have any problems. This was the first time we saw the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. it's a beautiful spot.

Day 11, Beach Camping and Jungle Exploration, Cahuita
Watch
Making our way further down to Panama. This is near Cahuita on the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. We went through a bit of bush and ended up on this cool coastline. It was the perfect place to camp and find some more food. We found some tasty termites and wild onions. And Jodi ran into a whole family of Capuchin monkeys.

St. John Sugar Mill Ruins - US Virgin Islands
Watch
Producer: AndrewBurnett
Over the years I have visited Sugar Mill Ruins at six different locations on the island of St. John. Reef Bay, Little Lameshur Bay, Brown Bay, Annaberg on Leinster Bay, Caneel Bay and Catherinberg on Centerline Road, the only ruins that are not located near the waters edge. All of the ruins used wind power except Reef Bay, which used steam power to press the sugar cane. Produced by Andrew Burnett, Come Out And Play Productions. andrew@goodimpressions.us

"Pirate Boat" Sailing on Coral Bay - St. John, US Virgin Islands
Watch
Producer: AndrewBurnett
One more adventure for the "Reluctant Tour Guides" in St. John. We noticed a boat was off it's mooring and washed up on the shore of Coral Bay. PAZ checked it out and found that it had been abandoned for several years. We managed to get it off the shore and cleaned her up. On her maiden voyage/Three Hour Tour, we had a great time at first. She really moved through the water! Then, without warning her rudder broke off and Andrew had to swim for the shore. He got a ride back to our Boston Whaler and came out to tow the "Pirate Ship" back to the bay. Just one more day and adventure in Paradise. Jenn and Dan Dive Waterlemon Cay - St. John, USVI
Watch
Producer: AndrewBurnett
Waterlemon Cay is on of the best snorkle dives on St. John. Located at the end of a 3/4 mile hike means that it is never crowded. There are so many different fishes and corals - you never know what you will find. Protected by the National Park, the fish and sea creatures are accustomed to people so you can get real close.
